Online Poker Ban: What now?
Friday, October 06, 2006
So the bill that I feel will effectively kill online poker as we know it in the US has passed the House and the Senate and is sitting on Bush's desk awaiting his signature. Most likely he will sign it. Amazing that 75% of the population of the US thinks the bill is bogus yet it is swept through the government faster than shit through a goose.
Once online poker dies, many of you will be looking for constructive ways to spend your newly acquired time. I have put together this short list to help.
Back to School
Yes that's right. Some of the best poker players in the world are highly educated individuals. Many hold degrees in Game Theory, Psychology, and Statistics. Never too late to learn something new.
Open an Offshore Account
Open an offshore account outside of the US. Once you have money in an offshore account the US government, for the most part, loses the ability to tell you what to do with it. Obviously if you are funding terrorism you will be in deep doo but I doubt they will have the time to track down people using it to play poker online. Also the legislation doesn't mention anything about restricting access to the poker sites, but focuses mostly on the transfer of funds.
Write a Letter To Your Congressmen and Senators
Find out how your representatives voted on this and send them a (respectful) letter. If they voted against then send them a letter of support. If they voted for it explain that they have not acted in the best interest of the people they are supposed to be representing and let them know they will not have your vote the next time the polls come around.
Read More Poker Books
Read more poker books. Study Study Study! I recommend starting with these. OnwMySeat.com Poker Book Store.
More Live Games
Play more live games. It is a purer form of the game in every respect. On any given night of the week I know of at least one home game being held somewhere nearby. Here is a website dedicated to home/private live game listings.
Start a Live Home Game
Start your own home game. Have a bunch of friends all bummed out by the current developments? Start your own live game. All the information you need is here.
Build a Table
What is a live game without a nice new poker table to play on? Same site as above but a different section. Hundreds of poker table projects many with plans.
